I didn't like the way my physical exam encounter went with this FNP. She gave unsolicited advice about my diet and nutritional intake. She also made too many unimportant referrals away from the appointment that had nothing to do with the primary reason I was there. She basically fat-shamed me and spoke to me like I had no common sense throughout the appointment. Little does she know, I work in the medical field myself, so I know the proper way to perform an evaluation and create a treatment plan while conducting a motivational interview of the patient resulting in a shared decision-making process with said patient. That requires asking the patient why they came to the visit in the first place, listening to their needs, and THEN collaborating on a treatment plan tailored to their needs. She did the opposite. She steam-rolled through generic nutritional facts, stretching exercises, and physical activity recommendations without even asking me what I do on a daily basis to manage my own health. I didn't come to this visit for that reason. It's also important to note, in more contemporary medical journals, BMI has been debunked from being the gold standard for healthy wealth management. She was giving me antiquated information (again, I know this because I'm a practicing health professional), without even having my lab results to make a more holistic clinical decision about my presentation. I only came to this appointment to ensure I got my annual mammogram scheduled. And yet, she didn't even address my concerns or listen to my needs until I interjected to advocate for the purpose of my visit. I had to listen to her lecture me about my diet and exercise for about 10 minutes before I could redirect her to the actual purpose of my visit. She was basically giving me generic talking points, like she was checking boxes, and not holding space for me to explain my health management routine. To be clear, I workout 4-5 days/wk for at least 45min doing kickboxing, yoga, and resistance training. I am a flexiterian-pescaterian (meaning I mostly eat mostly veggies and fruit, and seafood is my protein of choice). I know how to manage my health, as evidenced by my vitals during the visit and my lab work results. The whole discussion felt condescending and lacked any supporting evidence besides the number on a scale. I say all of this to say, her bedside manner and shared decision-making process was subpar.
I Had to Wait a Hour to see my Doctor, And I had a Appointment and I was On Time ?
Mia was very concerned about my problem
Mia Watkins is awesome. Caring & professional.
She went the extra mile to tell me about how I could save on my medications.
She was kind and talked to me with understanding and asked questions to understand what my concerns were
She was very knowledgeable, step by step with telling me what I needed to do. Thank you Ms. Watkins.
Mia Watkins is a nurse practitioner and I felt that she cared more about my health than other Doctors that I have seen under the Advocate Medical Group. Nurse Mia Watkins was very thorough with covering my medical history.
I was pleasantly surprised with Mia Watkins and her knowledge in how to take care of myself and what to do going forward was refreshing.
She was patient and kind.
